Peyronie’s Disease

Peyronie’s disease is a condition that causes scar tissue to form in the penis. This scar tissue can cause the penis to bend or curve, and it can also make erections difficult or painful. Peyronie’s disease is most common in men between the ages of 40 and 60, but it can occur at any age.

Causes of Peyronie’s Disease

The exact cause of Peyronie’s disease is unknown, but it is thought to be caused by a combination of factors, including:

  • Injury to the penis
  • Connective tissue disorders
  • Aging
  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Medications

      Symptoms

      The most common symptom of Peyronie’s disease is a bend or curve in the penis. Other symptoms may include:

      • Pain in the penis
      • Difficulty getting or maintaining an erection
      • A decrease in penis size
      • A lump or nodule in the penis

      Diagnosis

      Diagnosis of Peyronie’s Disease involves a physical exam and medical history review. Imaging tests such as ultrasound or MRI may be used to visualize the scar tissue in the penis.

      Treatment

      There are several treatment options available for Peyronie’s Disease. In mild cases, observation and monitoring may be recommended. In more severe cases, medication, injections, or surgery may be suggested.
