Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder that affects women of childbearing age. It is characterized by irregular menstrual periods, excess hair growth, acne, and infertility. PCOS is a common condition, affecting up to 1 in 10 women.

Causes of PCOS

The exact cause of PCOS is unknown, but it is thought to be caused by a combination of factors, including:

  • Genetics
  • Insulin resistance
  • Inflammation
  • Thyroid problems
  • Stress

Other factors that may contribute to the development of PCOS include a sedentary lifestyle, a diet high in refined carbohydrates and sugar, and exposure to environmental toxins.

      PCOS Symptoms

The symptoms of PCOS can vary from woman to woman. Some of the most common symptoms include:

      • Irregular menstrual periods
      • Heavy bleeding
      • Excess hair growth (hirsutism)
      • Acne
      • Infertility
      • Obesity
      • Weight gain
      • Dark patches of skin on the neck, armpits, and groin (acanthosis nigricans)
      • Headaches

      • Anxiety

      Diagnosis

There is no one test that can diagnose PCOS. A doctor will likely diagnose PCOS based on your medical history, physical examination, and blood tests.  An ultrasound may also be used to look for cysts on the ovaries.
