Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition that affects men as they age. It is caused by an enlarged prostate gland, which can press on the urethra and make it difficult to urinate. BPH is not cancer, but it can cause a number of uncomfortable symptoms, such as:
  • Frequent urination
  • Urinary urgency
  • Weak urine stream
  • Difficulty starting urination
  • Dribbling
  • Nocturia (urinating at night)

Causes of BPH

The exact cause of BPH is unknown, but it is thought to be caused by a combination of factors, including:
  • Aging
  • Family history
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Estrogen levels

      BPH Symptoms

The symptoms of BPH can vary from person to person. Some men may not experience any symptoms at all, while others may experience severe symptoms that interfere with their daily lives. The most common symptoms of BPH include:

      • Frequent urination, especially at night
      • Urinary urgency
      • Weak urine stream
      • Difficulty starting urination
      • Dribbling
      • Nocturia (urinating at night)

      Diagnosis

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of BPH, it is important to see a doctor for diagnosis. Your doctor will likely ask you about your medical history and perform a physical examination. They may also order some tests, such as:

      • Urinalysis
      • Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test
      • Digital rectal examination (DRE)

      Treatment

At VITALIZE, we offer a comprehensive approach to the treatment of BPH that focuses on reducing inflammation and hormonal imbalances, which are often underlying factors in BPH.   If you have mild symptoms, your doctor may recommend herbal remedies, supplements, and lifestyle changes.  If you have moderate to severe symptoms, your doctor may recommend medication or surgery. There are several different medications available to treat BPH. These medications work by relaxing the muscles in the prostate gland and making it easier to urinate. Surgery is usually only recommended for men who do not respond to medication or who have severe symptoms.
